A reality competition executive-produced by Mark Burnett, Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks TV. On the Lot, gave emerging filmmakers from around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks. The show aired during the summer of 2007 on FOX, and this unscripted series featured a cast of 18 undiscovered filmmakers who in turn were chosen from a pool of 12,000 applicants. These 18 finalist competed to win the support of the shows viewers, as their fate was decided by a weekly audience vote. Every week, the hopeful filmmakers created and directed short films from a chosen genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. They had access to some of the best resources the industry has to offer -- professional cast, top shelf crews, high end equipment and even a Hollywood celebrity or two. Nevertheless it was FOX viewers whose votes determined which film should be left on the cutting-room floor. The director whose short garnered the fewest votes was eliminated. The competition continued every week and the directors were eliminated one by one, until the final week where the last filmmaker standing headed onto DreamWorks to officially work ON THE LOT.
